Feb 18, 2008
For today's class, create a username and password to log into the class site. Then post two observations about two different parallels to the bible (discussed in Harris and / or on class site for today). Follow up to two other posts. Make sure your posts and followups are detailed, respectful, and non-sectarinan. (Note--your username should be close enough to your own name that I can give you credit for participation. )

Welcome
To get to know each other, I'd like us all to talk about our personal hell. The first place in the bible associated with Hell was Gehenna, a garbage dump outside Jerusalem where children were once sacrificed and criminals were executed. Is there a place (or a situation) in this life that might be as bad as that? Describe your personal hell.

Dante and Contrapasso
In these cantos, Dante illustrates his concept of Contrapasso in the punishment of sinners of avarice (hoarders and spenders) and wrath (the wrathful and the sullen). In each circle, he links both extremes of the same sin. Discuss how contrapasso works for one of these sets of sins. Then, respond to someone else's posting.
